A place of haunting is an area where Geralt may use Keira's magic lamp to listen to ghosts and obtain more information about the location. He cannot interact with the ghosts beyond listening to them, or in some cases following them. They are merely there to reveal information and tend to disappear once the necessary action has been taken.
