A hirikka is a creature even more rare than a dragon, an endangered species due to over-hunting. They are mentioned in passing in the Sword of Destiny collection of short stories.

In the Netflix series[ | ]

A Hirikka appears in Season 1, Episode 6: Rare Species when the group of dragon hunters is on their way to the Dragon's lair in the mountains. In the show, the Hirikka is a huge, humanoid bipedal creature whose head almost looks like that of an Aye-aye, sitting on a rather emaciated body with long, thin limbs. Jaskier is terrified when the creature comes from the undergrowth and suddenly reveals it's true size and looks down at him. While the other hunters are reluctant, the knight Eyck of Denesle attacks the poor creature in a frenzy and strikes it dead. Geralt then mentions it probably was very hungry and would have left if they just had offered it some food. The head of the Hirikka ends up on a stake and the rest of the beast is partly eaten by Denesle, who soon regrets this decision as his bowel revolts from the meat.

Episode 6: Rare Species is a retelling of The Bounds of Reason from the short story collection Sword of Destiny.

You won't kill hirikkas, because they're an endangered species, or mecopterans, because they're harmless, or night spirits, because they're sweet, or dragons, because your code forbids it.
